Understanding customer engagement
in luxury retail

Footfall data alone couldn't explain how shoppers engaged with concessions across the estate. Glimpse closed the gap with real-time shopper intelligence, using the CCTV cameras the store already had.

The engagement

The challenge, and what we did about it

The challenge

A leading luxury department store could measure footfall, but lacked visibility into engagement, dwell time and how shoppers moved through departments and concessions — making it difficult to assess brand performance or optimise store layout.

The Glimpse solution

Using existing CCTV infrastructure, Glimpse deployed real-time shopper intelligence across the estate, capturing footfall, engagement and dwell time to give the retailer and concession partners a shared, actionable view of performance.

The story

From counting visitors to understanding them

Footfall told the store how many people came in. It didn't say where they went, how long they stayed or which concessions held their attention. Brand performance was judged on sales alone, and layout decisions rested on experience rather than evidence.

Rather than add a new sensor estate, Glimpse worked from the CCTV cameras already covering the shop floor. Those camera feeds became anonymised footfall, dwell-time and engagement measures for departments and individual concessions, with no video stored and no personal data retained.

The distinction that mattered was engagement, not presence. Dwell is measured in front of fixtures and displays, and "passing through" visits are filtered out, so a concession is credited with the shoppers who actually stopped, not counting everyone who walked past it on the way to the escalator.

The result was a shared, real-time view of performance that the retailer and its concession partners could both act on: which placements drew engagement, how shoppers moved between departments, and where the layout was working against them. Concession placement and store layout were optimised on that evidence. Engagement with products and concessions rose 22%, and average monthly sales increased by £61,000.

What we measured

Four measures, one view of the shop floor

Footfall

Accurate visitor counts for every entrance and department, with repeat crossings de-duplicated.

Which departments earn their keep?

Dwell time

How long shoppers spend in each department and concession. Dwell is the first sign of interest, or of its absence.

Where do shoppers linger?

Engagement

Dwell in front of fixtures and displays, with pass-through visits filtered out for a true measure of what holds attention.

Which displays actually work?

Flow

How shoppers move through the store: routes taken between departments, zones visited, dead ends avoided.

Does the layout help or hinder?

Beyond the numbers

Footfall was the starting point, not the finish line

This store could already count its visitors, which was the foundation everything else stood on. What the client couldn't see was the half of the visit that decides performance: where shoppers went after the door, how long they stayed, and which concessions held them.

Glimpse added that layer from the cameras the store already had, and then stayed alongside the team to turn it into placement and layout decisions. Measuring more is the product. Changing the result is the partnership. See how the partnership works →
